Summer will be here soon, and maybe you need some new ideas for your family vacation. From traditional to unique, here are the top ten summer vacation spots for families.

Hawaii is beautiful, but it also has historic sites and museums to enjoy. Waikiki is very metropolitan for shopping and dining. The kids will enjoy the excitement of a traditional luau. Kids of all ages will like the Aquarium, and of course there are miles of beaches! Travel to the north shore to get out in nature on a hike. It may cost a bit more to stay in Waikiki, but it will save you in the end since you are close to everything, and many hotels offer free transportation.

Lake Tahoe
If you don’t enjoy the summer heat, try this gem on the border of California and Nevada. The lake has plenty of beaches and water fun. There are miles of hiking trails that take in the beauty of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. If you want to take a break, try a cruise around the lake or even kayaking. Although it is summer, many of the ski resorts offer summertime events and activities. Tahoe also boasts great restaurants and shopping.

San Diego
San Diego has mild and sunny weather all year round, and is a popular vacation spot for families. Balboa Park has many museums, gardens, and the famous San Diego Zoo. There are over seventy miles of beaches in the San Diego area. Stay at budget friendly hotels in the downtown area.You will still be able to get to the beach in mere minutes. Yellowstone Park
Yellowstone is our nation’s oldest park, but always offers something new to see. Who doesn’t want to see Old Faithful or the Mammoth Hot Springs? The temperatures can vary, even in summer, so layer clothing to be comfortable. Yellowstone also has great hiking through meadows and even forests. There are over 3,000 acres to explore, with canyons, mountains, and waterfalls. The park has campgrounds for the nature lovers and also lodges for those who want more comforts.

Anaheim (Disneyland)
Anaheim is a great location for theme parks. The king is Disneyland of course, but Knott’s Berry Farm is nearby and lots of fun. If you have younger kids, Adventure City has good rides and attractions, at a lower price than Disney. For baseball lovers, catch a game at the Angel Stadium of Anaheim. Long Beach is not too far away and a visit to the docked Queen Mary ship is a great way to spend an afternoon.

Cape Cod
While Cape Cod is a popular summertime vacation spot, there are enough beaches in the area that you will have space to yourself. Enjoy boogie- boarding or just splashing around in the ocean. There are many cottages available to rent, so you can cook some of your own meals. Rent bicycles and enjoy watching the boats and kayaks out in the water. Visit the art galleries or go on a whale watching excursion. You will be in heaven if you enjoy seafood. You can also catch your own food, such as clams, scallops and oysters. Just be sure to check the town’s laws regarding licenses.

San Francisco
There is no place like San Francisco. Everyone loves a ride on the cable cars, and it is a great way to view the city. The south end of the city has more affordable hotels, and there is a great public transit system that makes it easy to get around. Visit Chinatown or even walk across the Golden Gate Bridge. Pier 39 has great shopping and restaurants and there are always sea lions sunbathing and barking. Golden Gate Park has museums, gardens and an aquarium, too. Fisherman’s Wharf is a hub of activity with great restaurants around. For dessert nearby, the Original Ghirardelli Ice Cream & Chocolate Shop will put a smile on everyone’s face.

Families love to vacation in Orlando. There is much more to Orlando than just Disney. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is fun for older children.
